Breheny Commmit to Supporting The 'Living Landscape'
Complementing our major investment in, and involvement with, Butterfly World in St Albans, we are pleased to announce that as part of our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability we are now corporate members of both the Suffolk and Kent Wildlife Trusts.

Between them the Trusts manage over 100 nature reserves, with a vision to restore, recreate and reconnect habitats to ensure the survival of our flora and fauna for the future. The reserves cover a range of landscapes such as forest, farm, fenland, heath and wetlands.

Many of our indigenous species are at risk and need help to halt their gradual decline so that they can continue to exist in a 'living landscape' and do not eventually disappear completely or only to be experienced in a zoo or other artificial environment.

The reserves are free to visit so why not take some time to escape the hustle, bustle and noise of modern living and enjoy the peace and quiet of your local natural environs.

Breheny success at East of England ICE Awards

This year the East of England ICE Awards were held at Downing College, Cambridge and J Breheny Contractors came away with two awards in the Physical Achievement category. Receiving an 'Exceptional Merit Award' for the sea defense works at Hazlemere Road , Holland on Sea, Essex and a 'Commended' Certficate for the Hartham Weir project in Hertford.

At Hazlemere Road the project required the reconstruction of a sea wall that was in danger of collapsing. At tender stage Breheny proposed design modifications and methods that would save time and costs. These modifications, which included temporary works to allow for the faster progressive sequence to the works, were also used on a later scheme further along the seafront. The works were also carried out during the winter months to minimise disruption but this also meant that shift patterns changed daily to suit the tide and weather ie high winds and rough seas.
However despite this the project was completed six weeks ahead of the original construction project.

A completely different scheme at Hartham Weir consisted of the replacement of an existing weir with one that protects the adjacent Foul Water Trunk Sewer and provided a fish and canoe pass whilst also improving health and safety. The works had to be carried out on a live river as there was no opportunity to dam or over pump the river.
The scheme was successfully completed on time and within budget despite unforeseen problems and design changes.

The judges were impressed with the teamwork and ECI. Which thus provided value engineering whilst saving time and costs to the projects.

Well done to everyone who was involved in these projects.
