Performance Beyond Compliance
J Breheny Contractors start the New Year well with
another CCS award for a Cambridgeshire site. This was awarded to Simon Podd,
Site Agent, for 'Performance beyond Compliance' on our Trumpington Meadows
project.
Trumpington Meadows is a 350 acre site situated on the
southern fringes of Cambridge
on which infrastructure works are being carried out for a new residential
development and 145 acre country park. The works are to be completed in two
phases and include 278 works, road construction, mechanical and electrical and
utilities installations, landscaping and surface water, swales and balancing
pond drainage works.
The country park is an SSSI which runs adjacent to the
River Cam. In addition to which the works are programmed around archaeological
investigations taking place concurrently.
Congratulations go to Simon and his team.
Wandle Park Award and ICE Visit
November saw The Wandle Park project
awarded to J Breheny Contractors. Wandle
Park lies in the centre
of Croydon and consists mainly of grass fringed by mature trees, the River
Wandle flows through the park but is buried underground. Our main task entails the
restoration and reinstatement of the river.
In order to carry out the
works the river is to be temporary diverted whilst the existing culvert is
removed and a new river bed formed. The existing fountain will be refurbished
and new ponds and footpaths constructed. The existing paths and car park will
be resurfaced and a pedestrian footbridge and bandstand will also to be
installed together with extensive soft and hard landscaping.
Our
£2m works are due to start in January 2012 and will be registered on the
Considerate Contractors scheme. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has been
involved in the funding for part of the Wandle Park
project and will be visiting the site on 2nd March 2012.
Our Cliff
Road site at Holland
on Sea saw a visit by the ICE at the beginning of December. The works here
started in October this year so are well underway. Modifications are being
carried out to strengthen an historic seawall including the installation of
rock armour and the construction of an access ramp from the promenade to the
beach. On completion the promenade will be resurfaced, the hand railings
replaced and new steps constructed to the beach.
Lodden and Wey Lead the Way to Deliver a Successful Project
Works
on the Lodden and Wey recently received praise from Rick Moore at the
Environment Agency. The works form part of the Thames Area Minor Works
Framework which includes watercourse and vegetation maintenance, design and
build of watercourse assets, minor construction works, electrical/mechanical
installations and maintenance.
We
have 15 gangs in total working for the Environment Agency in the Thames region of
which two vegetation gangs and one chainsaw gang are employed on the Lodden and
Wey contract. This contract is now in its third year but despite the annual
programme starting late this year the gangs under the leadership of Colin Kelly
and supervision of John Beany together with gang leader Asa supported by Ryan
and Darren they are on track to complete the programme on time
The
gang strim the banks of vegetation and remove blockages such as fallen trees.
They are trained in the use of herbicides, chainsaws strimmers and chippers. Some
are also winch trained using 4x4 vehicles where rough terrain restricts normal
access.
Rick
Moore stated '.I think the attitude of your men is 1st class, they
are always cheerful and keen to do as we ask of them, I have checked their work
regularly, and they have been making a really good job, as well as being
conscious of Conservation, we have had good feedback from the general public as
well.'
Congratulations
go to all involved on this contract for all your efforts, work and attitude to
deliver this project on time and to the satisfaction of all concerned.
