J Breheny Contractors Ltd was set up in 1963 by Jack Breheny, who came to East Anglia from Ireland with just £2 in his pocket. By 1964, Jack was involved in the construction of the A12 Frostenden Bypass in Suffolk.
The company was formed in Lowestoft and is now based in Needham Market, Suffolk, with additional offices and depots in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire and Ashford, Kent.
On 10 June 2005, Breheny acquired Witham Valley Civil Engineering Ltd, based in Boston, Lincolnshire
Jack's son John is now Chairman of the company, which has approximately 500 directly-employed staff and a plant fleet of over 3000 items of equipment.
The biggest project carried out to date has been the South Lowestoft Relief Road and Associated Measures for which Breheny won a Considerate Constructors Silver Award in 2007.
Pre-tax profits on turnover for year ended 31 March 2007 was up 3.8% on last year.
Turnover for year ended 31 March 2006 stood at £91,765,164.
Breheny holds the following accreditions:
- ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)
- ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management)
- OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management)
