Civil engineering works facilitating installation of Low Level Radioactive Waste Storage vessel within concrete cell, erection of related stairways and gantries.
Breheny, having carried out the construction of the initial tank facility three years previously, were contracted as part of a team of subcontractors to provide additional storage capacity for spent resin.
Our part of the scheme involved the civil engineering works to enable the installation of a large steel storage vessel (supplied and fitted by others) housed within a new concrete cell which provided both secondary containment and radiation shielding from low level radioactive waste. The location of the cell was within an existing basement and was part of the operational waste facility that remained functioning throughout the build process.
We also supplied and erected a steel walkway including stairways and gantries to provide access to the upper level of the cell, the pump room, and the main resin storage tank.
