Pre-cast concrete floodwall, seawall construction and hard landscaping to Stone Pier to reduce flood risk.
This project were undertaken to increase the flood defence to 1:200 for the next 50 years whilst enhancing the landscape and amenity value of the seafront as part of Thanet District Council’s regeneration plans.
Essential to the project was the construction of a new 220m long shallow sloping stepped revetment. This innovative engineering solution removed the need for a high sea wall, preserving important sea views.
Strengthening works to Stone Pier, which plays a vital part in protecting Margate, was also carried out. This involved 295m of toe piling and stabilization of the loose chalk core by grout injection.
The scheme also included the construction of new sea walls along the remainder of Marine Drive and The Parade either side of the revetment.
The final key element of the scheme was the 7m wide stainless steel hydraulic powered raising floodgate and section of sea wall across the Rendezvous frontage.
This project was the community category winner at the ICE South East of England Engineering Excellence Awards.
